Leave you cat with a cat sitter or cattery but not friends or family

Cat Sleeping at home

We all love our cats, but sometimes life takes us away from home. When that happens, the question arises: cat sitter or cattery? While a friend or family member might seem like a convenient option, there are some key factors to consider to ensure your kitty's comfort and safety.

Why Friends and Family Might Not Be the Best Choice

Let's face it, we love our loved ones, but they might not be cat experts.  Here's why a professional cat sitter or cattery might be a better fit:

  • Unfamiliar Routines: Cats thrive on routine. A well-meaning friend who changes your cat's feeding schedule or playtime can cause stress. Many friends and family turn up at unusual times, maybe bringing friends or children with them, this could upset your cat.

  • Accidental Escapes:  Even the most careful friend might leave a door ajar, leading to an adventurous escape for your indoor cat.

  • Lack of Experience:  Cats can have complex medical needs or behavioural quirks. A professional will be equipped to handle these situations calmly and effectively.

The Advantages of Cat Sitters and Catteries

Both cat sitters and catteries offer unique benefits:

  • Cat Sitters:  Your cat gets to stay in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. Cat sitters can provide daily visits for feeding, litter box cleaning, playtime, and cuddles (if your cat enjoys them!). This is a great option for shy cats who dislike new environments.

  • Catteries: Catteries offer a social environment with separate enclosures for each guest.  This can be ideal for outgoing cats who enjoy feline company. Catteries are also staffed by professionals trained to provide care, including medication administration and playtime.

Finding the Purrfect Fit

Whichever option you choose, do your research!

  • Cat Sitters: Check references, insurance, and experience. Schedule a meet-and-greet beforehand so your cat can get comfortable with the sitter.

  • Catteries: Tour the facility to ensure cleanliness, spacious enclosures, and proper staff-to-cat ratios. Look for catteries that cater to your cat's specific needs, like play areas for energetic felines or quiet spaces for shy ones.
